Le Petit Echo de la Mode has been one of the most successful weekly periodicals in France, at least for its time-being. Launched in 1878, it lived in the minds and wardrobes of French women more than a century, thanks to senator Charles de Penanster and his wife Claire de Roux. Together, they save the cheap magazine from low circulation, turning it into an instant hit.
What is paradoxical about the edition is that Claire had to work under the male pseudonym Baronne de Clessy, in order to become editor-in-chief and be taken seriously - by society, not by her husband, we hope. Ah, those times when talent and the mere state of being a woman was not enough to have a top role in a women's magazine... Today, at least, we can pay our respect to this vintage gem from a progressive standpoint!
Even though the 60s came with a decline in interest, "the small echo" was still in print all the way to 1983. It remains in history as one of the most sold French weeklies. Nowadays, its value lies exactly in its status as a product from the past.
