A Hundred Years Back: The Glass Plate Photographs of Antip Koev Obushtarov (1888–1942)

Price 15.90€ (31.10 лв.)
  • A Hundred Years Back: The Glass Plate Photographs of Antip Koev Obushtarov (1888–1942) is an extraordinary photographic journey into Bulgaria at the beginning of the twentieth century. Working in the village of Shipka and the surrounding Kazanlak region, Antip Koev Obushtarov documented everyday life between approximately 1906 and 1931: families and children, work and celebrations, local customs and dress, agricultural life, the rose industry, visitors to Shipka and its monastery, and the landscapes and historic sites of the region. His photographs form a remarkable visual record of a Bulgarian world transformed by time.

The archive's survival is a story in itself. More than 500 glass photographic plates remained largely forgotten for decades before Obushtarov's descendants donated them to the Chirpanlieva House ethnographic collection in Shipka. Photographer Alexander Ivanov later undertook the painstaking work of examining, selecting and digitising the surviving images. Some plates bear striking traces of deterioration caused by time, moisture and light, giving the photographs an unexpectedly haunting visual quality. Bringing together 226 photographs, this substantial album is both a rediscovered photographic legacy and an invaluable document of Bulgarian social history, memory and cultural heritage.
