Let us take you on an adventure back in time and inside the mind of a young girl. Reny is an ordinary girl and she doesn’t beg you to be ashamed if you don’t know her, unless she was your great- or great-great grandmother. But today her autoportrait is extraordinary because of its value and the odd sentimentality that spans from holding something that was precious to a stranger more than a hundred years ago. These kinds of things somehow remind us that we are all connected through time and space.
But let us not forget the significance that time gives to certain objects and possessions, making them all the more valuable and rare to find. This ink autoportrait in particular dates back from 1937, when Bulgaria was approaching the end of its Third Kingdom, on the verge of communism. The style of the drawing is typical for the 1930s, which makes it a brilliant example of the frivolous domestic art at the beginning of the 20th century. What gives the portrait a higher degree of authenticity is the black & white photo of the girl that is attached to the back of the drawing. The whole composition would make for a wonderful, one-of-a-kind gift for any lady or gentleman with an affinity for vintage aesthetics, 1930s fashion, and, of course, Bulgarian history.
