Vintage letter from the The Fifth Danube Infantry Division - 3 December 1916
- The Fifth Danube Infantry Division was established in 1883 in the city of Ruse. It was then called the "3rd Infantry Brigade", and in 1891 it was renamed. It consists of two brigades in peacetime - Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo. Over the years, it has become an integral part of Bulgaria's defense, participating in both the Balkan and Inter-Allied Wars and the First World War. Despite changes in its name and its inclusion in larger military formations, the division remained in military service until the end of World War II, when it was disbanded. Two prominent officers headed the division during the two wars. One is officer Pavel Hristov and the other is officer Panayot Burnev. And you can see his letter in front of you - in early December 1916 during the First World War (1914-1918) officer P. Burnev left the division because he was promoted to chief of the 5th Military Divisional District in Ruse. He writes:Officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers,After three years of joint service, of which 14 months on the battlefield, I am parting with you today. The fighting life, the great moments and trials experienced in the fight against the enemies of the Fatherland, brought me together with you and created those spiritual ties that make our separation so sensitive today.Officer Panayot Burnev's letter is dated December 3, 1916 and is extremely well preserved, and his personal signature proudly stands at the end.
