- Old chief Danilo holds the sturdy gypsy loom in his hands. But he has a serious enemy - Ivan Liho, who leads a patient struggle to attract the gypsies to collective work. Ivan is supported by the beautiful Alta. After inviting the gypsies, the chairman turns to them for help during life and asks for horses. Danilo brings the most neglected horse from his rich herd. The gypsies mock him - and a split follows in the camp. After seriously injuring a young gypsy woman with a knife, he blames the collective farmers. But the girl remains alive and exposes Danila.
