But the girl loves the clerk Platon Zibkin, an honest and poor man who owes the owner two hundred rubles. Plato is threatened with debtor's prison. With the efforts of the nanny Poliksenia, who decided to help the lovers, a new guard appears in the house - a retired non-commissioned officer Sila Erofeevich Groznov, a former lover of Mavra Tarasovna.
