The mastermind behind the August 1983 cover of The New Yorker is no other but Jean-Jacques Sempé - French cartoonist and children's book illustrator whose most famous work is the collaboration with René Goscinny on the Le petit Nicolas book. In his art, he demonstrates a strong affinity for cityscapes and rural landscapes, which can be observed in the image used for this puzzle.
