L'Europeo's issue Behind Politics opens the door to the hidden mechanisms of power and to those who so often remain beyond the glare of the spotlight—the Freemasons and the Bilderberg Club, the members of Yale University's secret society Skull and Bones, as well as the participants in Washington's renowned National Prayer Breakfast.
At the centre of this exploration stand Charles and David Koch—the billionaire brothers who transformed libertarianism into a global creed. "Compared with the Kochtopus, Soros's empire of foundations is but a small squid," writes Valeri Naydenov in his incisive analysis of the brothers whose influence extends far beyond the boundaries of American politics.
Today, politics appears to have exhausted its messianic promise, yet its practitioners continue to behave like gods. "One must know when to bid farewell to this narcotic called power. Miss the moment, and power becomes a hat that is removed together with one's head—and without dignity," reflects the writer Lyubomir Levchev, who, before 10 November 1989, stood alongside the most powerful figures in the Bulgarian state.
