As a man who taught us that only the universe and human stupidity are infinite — though he was not entirely certain about the former — he is most certainly someone we can trust. Unfortunately.
The theme of the Third World War has been frighteningly relevant ever since the end of the Second, and today perhaps more than ever. The generations that remembered the horrors of the last great proof of human stupidity’s boundlessness are gone, and now the rattling of sabres is growing louder once again. It is astonishing how little we learn from our own mistakes, how short our memory is, and how history and our stories continue to spin in a macabre, enchanted circle.
Whether hell will descend upon our heads or, by some miracle, the dim-witted leaders of our time will manage to restore common sense to the agenda — only time will tell.
Because in this flawed and magnificent world, one thing alone is certain: what is, is; what will be, will be; and however much there is — that is how much there is.
