  • L’EUROPEO: THE DONORS Special Issue

We Bulgarians are, after all, capable of doing good not only for ourselves. This special issue of L’Europeo magazine, dedicated to the great philanthropists in modern Bulgarian history, is proof of that.

National heroes whose deeds are fully comparable to those of our greatest revolutionaries, clergymen, enlighteners, and statesmen. And to be honest, until very recently, they were deliberately erased from our national memory. Benefactors such as the Georgievi brothers, Palaveev, Filaretova, Kudoglu, Kodzhakafaliyata, Semov, not to mention the demonised Coburg dynasty — all of them were crossed out after 1944. The funds they donated were seized and absorbed into the state budget, and the buildings they erected — industrial, cultural, and charitable institutions of various kinds — were nationalised.

Today we have the task of restoring historical justice, with the faint hope that others like them will emerge — people similar to Lachezar Tsotsorkov in more recent times, whose charitable foundation is now washing away the shame of decades of forgetting Bulgaria’s philanthropic traditions.

Perhaps one day we will once again learn to do good not only for ourselves.
