In our part of the world, madness has long been recognized in a rather unusual way—not so much through literary characters as through the wisdom of proverbs. “The mad never tire.” “Madness makes life easy.” “God protects fools and drunkards.” “While the wise are still deliberating, the mad have already acted.” In these sayings, folk wisdom employs an almost unconscious metaphor to explain what remains fundamentally inexplicable. We scarcely understand the nature of the soul itself—how, then, could we hope to understand its afflictions?
With the distinguished company of Sigmund Freud, whose work laid the foundations of modern thought on the subject (while never forgetting his conviction that a healthy mind benefits from a healthy sex life); Ludwig van Beethoven, who descended into poverty, deafness, and madness in equal measure; the gifted Camille Claudel, unable to withstand the harshness of the world that surrounded her; the theatrical psychiatry of Jean-Martin Charcot at the Salpêtrière Hospital; the millionaire philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, haunted throughout his life by thoughts of suicide; the poetic genius Ezra Pound, a fascist by conviction and insane by diagnosis—conveniently so; and Rudolf Hess, whose fanaticism and madness ultimately became inseparable.
