  • The musical pantomime with modern elements based on Wilhelm Hauff's fairy tale leads to the southern German town of Grünwiesel in 1825. A stranger has withdrawn there to lead a quiet life. But he is a thorn in the side of gossip-loving philistinism. One day a circus comes to town, and shortly thereafter the stranger presents his "nephew" to the townsfolk. His unusual appearance and manners are interpreted by people as "foreign," and they think they recognize an Englishman in him. Society courts the "man of the world", imitates him and presents him with marriageable daughters. When the homage reaches its climax, the stranger ends the joke, his revenge. He reveals to the bourgeois who they are aping: a trained monkey.
