Losers
In English, they are called losers. In German, they are Verlierer. Other linguistic communities affectionately refer to them as perdants, häviäjiä, gubitnici—failures, misfits, the unlucky ones.
They are the underdogs, the ill-fated, the born losers: magnificent tragicomic characters without whom neither comedy nor tragedy could exist.
This issue of L’Europeo is our ode to them, our song in their honour.
We have chosen princes, politicians, athletes, soldiers, actresses, inventors, and misguided visionaries who not only did everything in their power to ruin whatever they touched, but who also serve as mirrors reflecting the full complexity of human existence.
And, truth be told, they make far more agreeable summer companions than the jealous husband, the wicked mother-in-law, and the screaming children surrounding us on the beach at Ahtopol.
