Списание L'Europeo № 85 | Losers | June/July 2023

  • Losers

    In English, they are called losers. In German, they are Verlierer. Other linguistic communities affectionately refer to them as perdants, häviäjiä, gubitnici—failures, misfits, the unlucky ones.

    They are the underdogs, the ill-fated, the born losers: magnificent tragicomic characters without whom neither comedy nor tragedy could exist.

    This issue of L’Europeo is our ode to them, our song in their honour.

    We have chosen princes, politicians, athletes, soldiers, actresses, inventors, and misguided visionaries who not only did everything in their power to ruin whatever they touched, but who also serve as mirrors reflecting the full complexity of human existence.

    And, truth be told, they make far more agreeable summer companions than the jealous husband, the wicked mother-in-law, and the screaming children surrounding us on the beach at Ahtopol.

    AMONG THE FEATURES IN THIS ISSUE:

    • Prince Harry—the uncrowned king of all the unfortunate souls on Earth;
    • Franz Ferdinand, from whom success fled as though it were the plague (and not only in Sarajevo);
    • Two distinguished failures of American politics: Hillary Clinton and the perennial presidential hopeful William Jennings Bryan;
    • Winston Churchill, who—believe it or not—fully deserves his place in this company;
    • Ronald Wayne, who sold his stake in what is today the trillion-dollar company Apple for a mere 800 dollars;
    • Antonio Meucci, who might have become one of the most celebrated names in science had he only paid the ten-dollar fee required to renew the patent for his invention, the telephone;
    • Tonya Harding and her extraordinary personal and athletic downfall;
    • Linda Lovelace, whose Deep Throat did little to save her from ultimate failure;
    • Private Henry Gunther, the final and profoundly absurd casualty of the Great War;
    • What does it mean to be struck by lightning not once, but seven times? The story of Roy Sullivan offers no straightforward answer;
    • The greatest folly in modern history: Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, who ceremonially burned one million pounds of their own music earnings;
    • Ted Kaczynski, who could have become a second Einstein, but instead turned into one of America's most wanted criminals;
    • The race for the South Pole: history remembers Amundsen as the victor, while Scott is remembered as the man who lost everything—including his life;
    • Tsutomu Yamaguchi, or how one finds oneself in atomic hell not only in Hiroshima, but in Nagasaki as well.
