L'Europeo No.78 | CANNES Film Festival | April/May 2022
The Cannes Film Festival embodies everything the contemporary world so often is not. It is a fragrant breath of escapism amid the suffocating stench of everyday life—a life that relentlessly tries to persuade us that nothing exists beyond routine, spiritual impoverishment, and war. For many, that is indeed the reality.
“The standards of Cannes are not our standards!” declared a former head of Bulgaria's state cinematography after the Bulgarian film Marriage (Zhenitba) won the Palme d'Or. His remark serves as a reminder that we, too, must examine the standards by which we judge the world. They may be the standards of Cannes—or those of Volokolamsk. Each of us must decide.
On the eve of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, we allow ourselves, if only for a moment, to dream of the beautiful life that someone, somewhere, always seems determined to take away from us.
