And although positive thinking remains little more than metaphysics for the faint-hearted, and Prince Myshkin's immortal declaration is perhaps better understood as a question than a certainty, what else can we do but repeat it to ourselves—with quiet determination and the hope that, this time, it might prove true?
This special edition of L’Europeo should be read as an expression of a deeply felt necessity: the need to seek out and celebrate beauty in defiance of a world that has become increasingly disfigured, both spiritually and visually. We have grown weary of a civilization governed by vulgarity, aggression, complacency, and mediocrity. What follows, then, is a deliberate act of inner escapism. Beauty may not save our world after all—but ugliness will almost certainly destroy it.
